GEBIODIV

Start Sept. 26, 2019

Duration 3 years

The PITEM Biodiv’Alp project - Project 3 - GEBIODIV Managing Biodiversity Aspects by Harmonizing Protected Alpine Areas Management Methods has as protagonists the partners of PITEM Biodiv'ALP and is coordinated by the Region of Piedmont.

The path of this project consists of several steps:

  • identifying the factors that make the condition of transboundary biodiversity critical, especially in more delicate areas such as mountainous regions;
  • developing a shared system useful for identifying and refining the best land management methodologies;
  • establishing a network of observers to assess biodiversity erosion and monitor the results of habitat restoration or species protection strategies, and the concrete implementation of a shared transalpine management and protection plan.

During the drafting of the project, several environmental criticalities related to land management and exploitation emerged: the most intensive activities in the area are pastoralism, tourism, the presence of infrastructure, and invasive species.

The attention and efforts of GEBIODIV focus on the concrete development of common management, redevelopment, and monitoring methodologies to reduce the degradation of this noble biodiversity reservoir.

Activities and expected results:

  1. IDENTIFICATION of the main factors of biodiversity erosion in the transboundary area;
  2. SHARING of the main management, recovery, and protection methodologies for habitats and species threatened by critical factors and identifying methodologies for predicting and evaluating impacts;
  3. ESTABLISHMENT and IMPLEMENTATION of an environmental observation network to monitor the main factors of biodiversity erosion and assess the effectiveness of the management and redevelopment systems prepared in the area;
  4. IMPLEMENTATION of concrete interventions to restore degraded habitats.

Therefore, the transboundary area is an opportunity to share the most suitable management and control methodologies for biodiversity erosion factors, to carry out concrete environmental redevelopment interventions in the transalpine region.

At the end of the Project in the transboundary area, shared management methods for the main critical factors, the establishment of a transboundary environmental observer network, and
