The institution has been operational since January 1, 2012.
It is established by the Piedmont Region (regional law n.19 of 2009 and subsequent amendments) due to an overall reorganization of the management of Piedmont's protected areas.
It has absorbed four bodies which were autonomous until 31 December 2011:
- the management body of the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand natural park;
- the management body of the Val Troncea Natural Park;
- the management body of the Orsiera-Rocciavrè natural park, the Chianocco ravine nature reserve and the Foresto ravine nature reserve;
- the management body of the Avigliana Lakes Natural Park.
It is governed by three bodies of a political nature - defined by article 13 of the founding law:
- the President (appointed regionally);
- the Council (composed of the President of the Institution and six members appointed by decree of the President of the Regional Council upon designation by the Community of Protected Areas, so that the representation of the environmentalist associations and the most representative national agricultural associations is guaranteed);
- the Community of Protected Areas (made up of the Mayors and Presidents of the local authorities involved).
The structure is managed by the Director.
It operates with employed personnel to whom the legal and economic status of regional personnel applies.
The protected areas community
The Presidents/Mayors of the following entities are members of the Community of protected areas:
- Metropolitan City of Turin;
- Mountain Union of Olympic Municipalities Via Lattea;
- Mountain Union of Upper Susa Valley Municipalities;
- Mountain Union of Valle Susa Municipalities;
- Mountain Union of the Chisone and Germanasca Valley Municipalities;
- Mountain Union of Val Sangone Municipalities;
- Municipality of Avigliana, Bussoleno, Chianocco, Chiomonte, Coazze, Exilles, Fenestrelle, Mattie, Meana, Oulx, Pragelato, Roure, Salbertrand, San Giorio, Sauze d'Oulx, Susa, Usseaux, Villar Focchiardo.
The president of the Community of protected areas is Roberto Pourpour (Mayor of the Municipality of Salbertrand).
The vice-president of the Protected Areas Community is Marina Pittau (Mayor of the Municipality of Mattie).
The Council and the President
The members of the Council are appointed by decree of the President of the Regional Council and remain in office until the expiry of the regional legislature.
The President, Alberto Valfrè, appointed by Decree of the President of the Regional Council 20 April 2022, n. 26, pursuant to art. 14 of Regional Law 19/2009, replacing Mauro Deidier, who resigned on 27 April 2021
