Toponymy Research Project

Start Jan. 1, 1982

Duration indefinite

The project aims to collaborate with the University to carry out surveys on Traditional Toponymy in the territories of the various municipalities that are part of the Protected Areas of the Cottian Alps.
It stemmed from an idea of the late Prof. Arturo Genre, who, together with the Piedmont Region, initiated the Research Project of the Toponymic Atlas in 1982, which extends across the entire territory of the municipalities that are part of the Mountain Communities of Piedmont. In particular, at that time, the cooperation of the Piedmont Parks was requested, which committed their employees to conduct research in the territories of the municipalities concerned.
In our Organization, this has allowed for various research projects, some of which have had the honor of being published in volumes with attached toponymic maps.

Currently, the volumes of the following municipalities have been published:

  • No. 5 Chianocco 1995 Researchers Graziano Borello, Paola Tirone;
  • No. 17 Avigliana 2001 Researchers Tiziana Salotti, Giovanni Falco;
  • No. 20 Salbertrand 2002 Researcher Roberto Cibonfa;
  • No. 21 Coazze 2002 Researchers Carla Ru, Mauro Lussiana (former employees of the Cottian Alps Parks Authority);
  • No. 30 Exilles 2006 Researcher Roberto Cibonfa;
  • No. 42 San Giorio di Susa 2013 Researcher Elio Giuliano;
  • No. 45 Chiomonte 2013 Researcher Roberto Cibonfa;
  • No. 62 Sauze d'Oulx 2023 Researcher Roberto Cibonfa;
