Over 25,000 kilometers of transects covered, thousands of presence signs collected on the ground, and hundreds of genetic samples analyzed in the laboratory. These are some of the numbers that tell the impressive monitoring work of the wolf performed in Piedmont over the past two years. The results are gathered in the new report The Wolf in Piedmont 2023-2025, created within the framework of the European project LIFE WolfAlps EU and the subsequent activities of the AfterLIFE Plan, which provides an updated picture of the population status and the monitoring activities carried out over the past two years.

The new scientific report "The Wolf Population in the Italian Alpine Regions 2023–2024" has been published, carried out as part of the European project LIFE WolfAlps EU. The study updates the picture of the distribution and population size of the wolf along the Italian alpine arch, providing data that are fully comparable to those from the previous national monitoring conducted in 2020–2021.

Three species of small mustelids – the stoat (Mustela erminea), the weasel (Mustela nivalis), and the European polecat (Mustela putorius) – coexist in the varied landscape of North-Western Italy, but they remain largely elusive and poorly known. A recent study conducted by a group of Italian researchers, including Luca Maurino from the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps, used ecological niche models (ENM) and a wide network of sightings to map the probability of presence of these species and compare their environmental requirements on a regional scale. The results, published on November 22nd in the scientific journal "Mammal Research", provide useful insights for guiding targeted conservation actions and focusing on emerging threats.

On October 16 and 17, a meeting took place at the headquarters in Salbertrand of the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps among the partners of the ALCOTRA ACLIMO project, the cross-border initiative Italy-France dedicated to water resource management in times of climate crisis. The Italian staff from the Protected Areas of the Maritime Alps, the Gesso Stura River Park, the Regional Natural Park of the Ligurian Alps, and the Gran Paradiso National Park, along with their French colleagues from the Mercantour National Park, the Écrins National Park, and the Vanoise National Park, gathered for an intensive two-day exchange on the progress of work and field visits to observe some initiatives under development in the Parks of the Cozie Alps.

Even during the summer of 2025, monitoring activities are underway to measure the impacts of tourist attendance on mountain flora and fauna. After an initial experimental phase conducted in 2024, the work continues within the Interreg BiodivTour Alps Project along Provincial Road 173 of the Assietta, where intense human presence occurs in a fragile high-altitude environment during the summer.

The mountainous areas are among the most valuable and fragile biodiversity hotspots globally, hosting unique species adapted to harsh climatic conditions and extreme environments. However, a recent study conducted along an altitude gradient in the Western Alps highlights how protected areas, while essential for the conservation of mountain fauna, are facing increasing pressures related to climate change and land use changes, which have repercussions on mountain biodiversity.

La pubblicazione edita dal Senckenberg Deutsches Entomologisches Institut ha accettato il lavoro sottoposto da Davide Giuliano, guardiaparco, e Barbara Rizzioli, funzionaria dell’Area Biodiversità, con il titolo “Mini-round box as standardized sampling method for orthopterans in alpine and subalpine grasslands: a field study to highlight strengths and weaknesses”.

Il progetto monitora una serie di gruppi animali, con l’obiettivo di identificare e documentare i cambiamenti che possono avvenire nel corso del tempo, come conseguenza dei cambiamenti globali; inoltre, mira ad approfondire le conoscenze su taxa poco studiati, quali i ragni, e ad analizzare la distribuzione della biodiversità lungo gradienti ambientali e altitudinali, anche al fine di individuare specie e habitat più vulnerabili ai cambiamenti ambientali e climatici e attuare di conseguenza opportuni modelli gestionali.
