Smoke sauna

Wooden blockbau reconstruction of the prototype Smoke-sauna designed by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto for his experimental house in Muuratsalo (Finland).

The Smoke sauna of the Colombano Romean Ecomuseum was built along the shores of the Iceberg Lake between 2003 and 2005, in three successive work camps aimed at students of the Degree Course in History and Conservation of Architectural and Environmental Heritage, coming from various European Universities, following the traditional wood processing techniques in Finland, under the technical direction of Finnish master carpenters and with the collaboration of local craftsmen.

The construction of a smoke sauna in Val di Susa may seem like an element foreign to the culture and the environment, but, integrated into the context of the Ecomuseum, it takes on an important meaning of integration between different constructive realities, especially concerning traditions, technologies, and tools used.
