Learning to Choose

A teaching proposal to discover in the valleys of the Parks of the Cottian Alps the places where the dramatic pages of the History of the Resistance in the Second World War were written. Not only to not lose memory of them, but also to stimulate the need and duty to know how to choose. Being Partisans means taking sides, and to be so, one must acquire the necessary tools to be able to choose by merging emotions with knowledge.

Description

The excursion in the Val Troncea Natural Park will take place in areas characterized by a typically alpine environment, and it will be the very places themselves that will suggest to us the continuous need to know how to choose: paths, equipment, difficulty levels, awareness of our physical and experiential limits.

Methodology

The activity will begin with a visit to the headquarters of the Val Troncea Natural Park in Pragelato where you can see artifacts related to the period of the Partisan occupation in the valley. Subsequently, we will reach the hamlet of Pattemouche (1585 m.) from where our excursion will start, which depending on the group's abilities may reach the hamlet of Troncea (1915 m.) and then Seytes and return, or more simply Laval and with a loop path the so-called Fonderia della Tuccia and return.
Both itineraries allow us to outline the history of an almost unique experience in the history of the Resistance with the creation of a free territory, with a real form of Autonomous Government. In Laval - for example - there was a small hospital, while the Tuccia was a real prison where captured Nazi fascists were imprisoned and used as exchanges for the release of Partisans. The experience of this small form of a free republic ended with a real pitched battle between July and August 1944 when the forces of the Resistance were forced to abandon the territory. As a revenge and reprisal, all the hamlets in the valley were set on fire.
The walk will allow us to delve into the stories of those times with tales passed down in the diaries of the legendary "Butler," the code name of Marcellin, a famous Partisan Commander, a real Robin Hood in his role as a human and ruthless leader at the same time.
Stories of men, but not only. We will move in a high-altitude landscape, where the sighting of chamois, marmots, and eagles is common, among larch forests and alpine meadows, an opportunity to discover the Val Troncea Park, not by chance called the Park of Flowers.
