Mucca al pascolo - Luca Giunti
The research project funded by ASL TO3 with the support of Fondazione CRT “Accidental Poisonings in Domestic Animals: Diagnosing to Understand” has concluded in December, in collaboration with Regione Piemonte, IPLA spa, IZS Piemonte Ligura e Valle d’Aosta, the Protected Areas Management Authority of the Cozie Alps, the Department of Veterinary Sciences at Unito, and the Department of Agricultural, Forest, and Food Sciences at Unito.
The project is based on the premise that plant intoxications are the second cause of poisoning in grazing ruminants after pesticides, and the phenomenon is likely underestimated due to a lack of adequate training for veterinary staff and structured surveillance systems.
Starting from the assumption that the best weapon against livestock poisoning is a precise knowledge of toxic plants and timely recognition of the problem, monitoring and research actions have been developed that led to the drafting of informative sheets on some toxic plant species for animals, currently published on the Regione Piemonte website and made available to breeders, technicians, and veterinarians.

As part of the project, technicians and experts have conducted inspections and provided pasture management advice to breeders, who were also given a leaflet with indications for identifying symptoms of animal intoxication, procedures to follow, contacts, and references.
