Climate and water: synergies for the future between alpine parks

ACLIMO supports the territory in the challenge of climate change and the ever decreasing availability of water, for the conservation of the natural heritage.

What is Alcotra AClimo?

The parks in the cross-border area are facing the great challenge of climate change - and in particular the reduction in water availability - which has a dangerous impact on Alpine species and habitats and at the same time has clear repercussions on the mountain economic system and activities at high altitude.

ACLIMO aims to provide concrete support to the territory towards a sustainable transition of human activities, in particular pastoral ones, for the conservation of the natural heritage, through an ever-increasing knowledge of the effects of climate change on the habitats and species most vulnerable to availability of water.

The objectives of the project

  • increase the awareness of local operators and the general public on the need to adapt to the ongoing change, promoting good practices already in place and raising public awareness to activate virtuous behaviors already in daily practices;
  • analyze the effects of climate change on habitats and species particularly sensitive to poor water availability;
  • increase knowledge of water availability through a shared modeling tool based on satellite data and intervene on aquatic environments and wetlands to increase their resilience to periods of prolonged drought;
  • support agricultural activities in the transition, in particular pastoral ones, in line with the need to preserve the natural heritage through a lower impact on habitats.
