Recipients

  • Primary school (4th and 5th grades)
  • Lower secondary school
  • Upper secondary school

Objectives

  • Explore the biology, ecology, and conservation strategies of the ibex shared by Italy and France
  • Inform students and teachers about the fragile presence of the ibex in the Alpine arc, also linked to climate change
  • Raise awareness about the health risks faced by ibexes
  • Discover monitoring techniques, capture, and data processing through innovative technologies
  • Introduce the complexity of alpine ecosystems and the importance of ecological corridors
  • Promote and educate responsible behavior in protected areas

The educational proposal is related to the monitoring and management project of the ibex LEMED-IBEX (from Lake Geneva-Léman to the Mediterranean) financed by the transfrontier cooperation program ALCOTRA ITALY-FRANCE 2014-2020.
It includes actions aimed at identifying risk factors for the conservation of the species.
It involves the assessment of health risks and the analysis of genetic variability, factors that together with human disturbance of the habitats frequented by the ibex, can negatively affect the resilience of the populations.

Description

The ibex is an ideal pretext for interdisciplinary education: from natural sciences to history passing through geography and climate, in addition to genetic concepts necessary for the correct definition of the status of populations and conservation strategies.
Activities can be agreed upon with the teacher and adapted to the ongoing educational program for each class.

Methodology

The proposal consists of two parts:

  • A 2-hour classroom meeting preparing for the outdoor trip with a video presentation (availability of interactive whiteboard or overhead projector is required)
