The “Meizoun Occitana” and the relationship between man and the environment in search of a balance between conservation and exploitation of resources
Starting from the observation of the ancient villages of Val Troncea, it will be possible to discover how the architectural characteristics of the so-called "Meizoun Occitana" best represent the relationship between humans and the environment in search of a balance between conservation and exploitation of resources. The area of Pragelato and Traverses - the antechamber of the actual Val Troncea Natural Park, leads us to reflect on the scenarios of possible tourism that promote the mountains in various facets: "playground", wilderness, outdoor gym, wellness spot...
One of the objectives of the day will be to deepen and develop any proposals on the role of a Park Authority and imagine new suggestions for visits to the "High Lands".
The excursion will take us to visit the villages of Laval and Troncea, gradually discovering how the structure of the houses and settlements is functional to "living the mountain life". Each room has a specific purpose in the functionality of the house and the family.
We will tell how it is possible to identify a "civilization of the fireplace" in contrast to that of the stove or "stube", which and how many materials were used for the construction. Where they chose to build and why. We will try to learn to read the territory to understand its potential through the eyes of ancient mountain people. The walk will also lead us to discover a fantastic alpine landscape full of naturalistic insights. We will try to compare the pastoral iconographic image with the stories of a much harsher daily reality, but equally fascinating.
Reflecting on how the severity of such an existence ended up determining the state of abandonment in which some villages now lie. We will become true investigators in search of a lost civilization and the remains of houses, the ruins of ancient structures linked to mining exploitation will be our playground.
