Latest works on the Selleries road

Oct. 9, 2025

The restoration works on the Selleries road are nearing completion. After the significant disturbances recorded during the summer of 2024, the management authority of the protected areas of the Cozie Alps was able to benefit from a ERDF funding for the implementation of a project for the improvement of the dirt road, shared with the municipalities of Fenestrelle and Roure, between the junction with Provincial Road No. 172 of the Colle delle Finestre and the basin where the pasture and the Selleries refuge are located. The works took place over the summer, with a break from the second half of July to the end of August to avoid hindering the period of greatest tourist attendance.

Initially, work proceeded with water management interventions through the reconstruction of drainage ditches along the entire route, remodeling and maintaining existing longitudinal ditches, and rebuilding the crossings over the two streams in the Bergerie Jouglard area. Subsequently, a double piled wall was created to support an unstable slope: this type of intervention was carried out favoring natural engineering solutions that involved the use of locally sourced certified PEFC larch, taken from a forest site a few kilometers away.

Currently, the works have entered the final phase concerning the roadway where the foundation along the entire route is undergoing remodeling with milling and rolling interventions. In areas subject to greater disturbance and erosion, two types of pavement will be constructed: one section will be made of local stone laid “knife-style” and another with eco-friendly stabilized and draining pavement for motorable roads. The latter solution is configured as an experiment, at the request of the Piedmont Region, to evaluate its actual effectiveness in mountain climatic conditions.

The works, barring any unforeseen site issues, should conclude by the end of October. The road will continue to be entirely impassable from Monday to Friday, while on Saturdays and Sundays the executing company will ensure access for motorized vehicles, always with the aim of not penalizing the use of the area and the existing tourist activities.

It is reminded that from November 1, 2025, to June 15, 2026, the SP 172 will observe winter closure for motorized vehicles starting from Pra Catinat, consequently, the Selleries road will also be closed to motorized traffic.
