A stop for the Eurasian Dotterel in the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Nature Park

Start Jan. 1, 2013

Duration 5 years

Protection and safeguarding of an important alpine ecosystem identified as a stopover site during post-reproductive migration by the Eurasian Dotterel and other bird species

The main purpose of the project is the protection of an area consisting of alpine meadows and a small peat bog at an altitude of about 2450 meters, within the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Natural Park, which serves as a stopover site for the Eurasian Dotterel (Charadrius morinellus) and other bird species during post-reproductive migration (see attached sheet). This conservation effort is necessary due to the presence of the nearby Assietta carriage road (Provincial Road 173), heavily frequented during the study period, resulting in anthropogenic disturbance characterized by the high presence of hikers.

Another aim of the project is to increase knowledge of the avifauna in the study area through visual monitoring and scientific ringing techniques, and to gather data on the presence of the Eurasian Dotterel, determining the sex and age of the observed individuals during the migratory passage period established based on previous data between August 20 and September 15.
Furthermore, a complementary research activity is carried out involving the use of colored rings with alphanumeric codes specifically applied to the Eurasian Dotterel, which will allow us to study not only migratory movements but also the biology and behavior of the species, with a particular focus on group composition and days of stay in the area.

Collaborations

Monitoring is carried out by the park rangers authorized for scientific banding activity (Domenico Rosselli and Giuseppe Roux Poignant) and collaborators.

The project is financially supported by Federparchi (Italian Federation of Parks and Nature Reserves) through the Italian Biodiversity Fund funded by "Le acque della salute Uliveto e Rocchetta" from the Co.Ge.Di. International Spa group.
