Genepì is a small plant that grows on scree and rocky areas at altitudes above 2300 m, but it is also cultivated in mountain areas on suitable terrains for the production of herbal teas and liquors.
Folklore distinguishes between male and female genepì, but in reality, they are different species of the genus Artemisia: A. mutellina, A. glacialis, A. spicata, and A. genepy.
When macerated in alcohol, it produces a liquor with a golden yellow color with green reflections, while when distilled with alcohol vapors in a saturated environment, it produces a white liquor with intense and delicate aromas.
It is a plant that in its natural state is affected by climate change and the qualitative decline of its habitats often due to human activities. For this reason, in Piedmont, outside of parks and natural reserves, the collection of a maximum of 5 plants per person per day is allowed, without damaging their root system.
